Angry lover kills 17-year-old girl by setting her on fire in Andhra’s Nandyal

Amravati: In a shocking incident, a youth killed a 17-year-old girl by pouring petrol on her and setting her on fire in Andhra Pradesh’s Nandyal district.

The incident took place in a house in Nandikotkur town of the district in the early hours of Monday. The victim was sleeping in her house when the accused committed this gruesome crime. Seeing the commotion, neighbors reached the house and found the victim surrounded by flames. He died on the spot.

Neighbors beat up the accused and it is being told that he also got burnt. According to local people, the accused was allegedly harassing the girl in the name of love. Reportedly angry with the girl for not expressing his love to her, the boy poured petrol on her and set her on fire.

The victim was an intermediate second year (Class 12) student of a private college in the city. Her parents had sent her to her grandparents’ house in Samarlakota because the accused was stalking her. The girl lived in a separate room in her grandparents’ house.

After midnight the accused entered the room and committed this heinous crime. Police are also trying to find out whether the boy tried to commit suicide after setting the girl on fire or whether he was injured while setting the fire. Police arrested the accused and admitted him to the government hospital in Kurnool, where his condition is said to be critical. Such horrific crimes against women and children have been witnessed in Andhra Pradesh in recent times.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), crimes against women in Andhra Pradesh increased by 43 percent in 2022. The state ranked sixth in the country in crimes against women. Expressing concern over increasing crimes against women, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu stressed the need to set up special courts for speedy trial of such crimes.
