India summons Bangladesh envoy over border fencing

New Delhi: India on Monday summoned Bangladesh’s acting High Commissioner Nooral Islam and told him that New Delhi has followed all laid down protocols in the construction of the border fencing between the two neighbours.

India’s action comes a day after Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Prannoy Verma was summoned by the neighboring country’s Foreign Ministry to express its “deep concern” over the “activities” of the Border Security Force.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Islam conveyed that India has adhered to all protocols and agreements between the two governments on border security measures and it expects that all earlier understandings by Bangladesh will be followed by a cooperative approach. “Acting High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India Mohammad Nooral Islam was called by the Ministry of External Affairs to South Block at 2 pm today,” an official readout said.

“It was conveyed that with regard to border security measures, including fencing, India followed all protocols and agreements between the two governments and the Border Security Force and Border Guards Bangladesh,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in the readout.

It said India reiterated its commitment to ensure a crime-free border by effectively addressing the challenges of cross-border criminal activities, smuggling, movement of criminals and smuggling.

“Establishment of barbed wire fencing, border lighting, installation of technical equipment and cattle fencing are measures to secure the border,” it said.

“India expressed its hope that all earlier understandings will be implemented by Bangladesh and a collaborative approach will be adopted to combat cross-border crimes,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.
